Our business is built on a foundation of talented, hard-working people who pull together as a team and deliver on time. But we go beyond that. We deliver exceptional quality, meeting the most rigorous health and safety requirements, using the latest technology, with the lowest environmental impact.

Health & Safety

We take our health and safety responsibilities very seriously and we’re proud of our safety record. Our people are important to us and their safety is our number one priority.

On site training and risk assessment

Our managers carry out site training for all our operatives, while every single person working on our behalf goes through a comprehensive health and safety induction and is subject to on site competency assessment. Risk assessments and method statements are completed for all projects and are shared with our team as part of the induction process and continual on site assessment.

External audits

Our safety management systems are regularly reviewed and updated by our Health and Safety Advisor, including our company health and safety policy; we are kept up to date with any changes that occur within the industry.

Accreditation

We currently hold CHAS, NHBC, SMAS and CQMS health and safety accreditations, along with BSi and BBA for our manufactured products.

Environment

As a leading building contractor, we recognise our responsibilities and legal duty of care to the environment. But it goes beyond that, we genuinely want to make a difference.

Environmental Policies

Mitchell and Urwin take our Environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and are very proud to have achieved Net Carbon Zero Status for our generated waste streams.

We are continually achieving Net Zero Carbon Waste Status by partnering with market leading company Envirovue who dispose of all of our manufacturing waste into dedicated recycling streams where less than 0.1% of our waste annually goes to Landfill. In doing so, we generate carbon credits which Envirovue use to assist worldwide programmes of conservation measures.

Waste, Dust and Pollution Reduction

The amount of waste generated on site has been reduced by over 60% by using the facilities at our Brickyard. Most cutting of bricks and blocks and formation of bespoke stone work is carried out at the Brickyard with very little waste generated. Any off cuts or other waste generated are recycled and turned into building blocks where possible.

Emissions of dust at the Brickyard are controlled by water suppression and fine dust processors.

Controls are implemented on all sites to reduce the potential for pollution of land, air or water. We are striving to be paperless thanks to the further development of our IT systems.

Recycled Water

The water used for dust suppression is filtered and recycled to reduce overall consumption.

We have invested into a new silt system whereby dirty water from our cutting processes is filtered through underground tanks and recycled for reuse, thereby reducing the risk of pollution to water courses and also reducing electrical consumption from machinery which had been previously used.

Water Bottle Reduction

We have installed chilled water drinking stations within our Factory and issued vacuum flasks across the workforce, thereby in the last 12 months saving the disposal of some 5,000 250ml plastic water bottles according to the digital records on the drinking stations.

Fuel and Energy Efficient

We have a modern fleet of vehicles that are fuel efficient and are regularly serviced. Deliveries from the Brickyard are planned to maximise loads and reduce the number of journeys and also incorporate good route planning to reduce overall mileage.

Where practicable, energy reduction measures are implemented in all our buildings including installation of energy efficient lighting and maximising insulation.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability is integral to our operations and reflects our dedication to creating a better future for our community and the planet.
